Handicrafts in Iran encompass a wide range of artistic and traditional practices that are produced in compliance with religious and legal canons, with an emphasis on creativity, taste, and aesthetic values, and through the use of readily available raw materials. The process of making and producing these works—whether individually or collectively—is carried out predominantly by hand and with the aid of necessary traditional tools. The resulting products possess considerable added cultural and economic value. Due to the possibility of overlap among certain fields and the existence of similar practices known by different local names, the identification and enumeration of all groups and disciplines is a complex task and not free from potential inaccuracies. Nevertheless, to date, a total of 18 major groups and approximately 299 fields have been identified and approved by the Department of Handicrafts and Traditional Arts. The attached publication, titled Iran Handicrafts & Traditional Arts, offers a selected overview of these groups and fields.
